Eac h period is separated b y a shot of a church b ell double-expo sed on t he sky. Alth ough the film has a vibrant a nd instructive way of communic ating the diffe rent epochs a nd styl es to student s, it d oes not exhibit the ar tistic qual ity that usua lly distingu ishes a Drey er film, exc ept per haps in some of the cos tumes, which were orig inally made for Day of Wrath. Dr eyer woul d rework the script t hat was w ritten by edi tor and folk hi gh-scho ol principal B ernhard Jense n, aided by a committee of expert s consisting of architect H . In the la st half of July, Drey er and Victor Hermanse n travelle d the count ry to l ook at s uitable church es. They rese arched the de tails and at Dreyer’s reque st a numb er of te chnical c hanges were made to the ch urches, i ncluding the removal of porce lain holders f or electrica l wiring in Tveje Me rløse Chur ch. On 4 July , Dreyer w ent in advance to Ringkøbing. Shooting was set to star t a few d ays lat er with the arriva l of the dire ctor of photo graphy, Preben F rank, who h ad fallen off a ladde r and bro ken his leg, Fortun ately, he was ready to cautiously st art work ing again with in a few day s, with hi s leg in a cast. Otherwis e, the produ ction went wi thout a glitch. Everywh ere, Dr eyer said , they w ere well receiv ed at the vicarages and they had no pr oblem getting e nough extras. On 1 august, they re turned to Cop enhagen with almost all the ir footag e in the can. They only needed to film the chur ch in S kelby, whe re the weather had been aga inst them, plus a Swedis h woode n church i n Hedared. The economy wa s distressed so soon af ter the war, e specially wh en it came to f oreign cur rency, but the re were no real wooden churches left in Denmark and bu ilding an int erior set in the stu dio would b e too expen sive. The fi nished film was shown for the first time on 24 Se ptember 194 7 to a small , closed c ircle, whi ch included the Ministe r for Ecclesi astical Affairs. In Decembe r 1947, as was Da nsk Kulturfi lm’s standard practic e, the film was prese nted to the press , politic ians and others on a programme w ith four oth er short fi lms.详情
