    • While survey ing a te legraph line in 1861, West ern Union engin eer Edwa rd Creighton (Dean Jagg er) is severely injured in a n accident. H e is discov ered by Va nce Shaw (R andolph S cott), an outlaw on t he run from a posse. Forced to trave l on foo t after h is horse was hurt, Shaw at first consider s steal ing Creighton& amp;#39;s horse, b ut changes his mind and tak es the man wi th him, savin g his life. Som etime later, followin g his recove ry, Creight on return s to Omaha, Nebraska and plans th e constructi on of a telegraph line from Omaha to Salt La ke City, Utah. Facin g consi derable o pposition to the line from Confede rate soldiers , Indians, an d outlaws, Creighto n elicits the help of his sister S ue (Vir ginia Gilmore ), foreman Pat Grogan (Minor Watson) , and assis tant Homer K ettle (Chill Wi lls). Looking t o put his outlaw past beh ind him, S haw arrive s at Creigh ton&amp ;#39;s Western U nion office lookin g for h onest work and is hired a s a scout b y Grogan who is unaware of his past. C reighton rec ognizes him a mong the men a nd allows him to stay d espite his sus picions. Creig hton also hires tenderfoot Richard Blake (Robert Young), a Harvard -educated eng ineer as a favor to Blake&# 39;s fath er. Shaw and Blake are both att racted to S ue and vie for her attent ion, but thei r romanti c rivalr y is cut short when constru ction o f the telegrap h line starts on July 4, 186 1. After work commences on the line, one of the men is killed appare ntly by a mys terious b and of catt le-rustling Ind ians. Unc onvinced that Indian s are to bl ame, Sha w rides out to investigat e and follows t he rustlers&am p;#39; tr ail to t he camp of Jack Slade, a former friend and coh ort, who se gang commit ted the killi ng disguis ed as Indian s—the gang Shaw lef t followi ng his la st bank robbe ry. Slade rev eals that they are worki ng for t he Confede racy to disrupt Western U nion because t hey believe th e telegra ph servic e will help t he Union. Shaw rides aw ay and ret urns to the line. Not wanti ng to tur n in his f ormer fr iends, Shaw t ells Creight on that a large ba nd of Dakot a Indians s tole the cat tle, and re commends that they si mply replace the herd and n ot risk a fig ht with th e India ns. Someti me late r, a confront ation takes pla ce between men workin g on the forwa rd line and a band of drunken India ns. Whe n one of the In dians tries to steal some equi pment, a nervo us Blake shoots him, ignor ing Shaw& #39;s o rder to rem ain calm. Af ter word arri ves that the m ain camp is under attac k by oth er Indians , the Wester n Union men rush back to help with t he defe nse. At t he main camp, Slade&amp ;#39;s men, who are agai n disguised a s Indians, s teal the We stern Union h orses. The c ompany discover the ruse wh en one of the wounded Indi ans tur ns out to be a wh ite man. Forced to buy b ack their stolen horses f rom Slade, C reighton be comes s uspicious of Shaw&amp ;#39;s involvem ent, especia lly when he admits t o knowing the gang. Soon th e U.S. Army arr ives and ann ounces th e Indians have now refused t o allow the telegra ph lines t o go thr ough their terr itory in res ponse to Blake& amp;#39;s shoot ing of the drunken India n. Creig hton, Shaw , and B lake ride out to convin ce Chief Spotted H orse to all ow them to buil d the line through I ndian ter ritory, even though the ma n Blake woun ded was Spot ted Horse&# 39;s son. Creighton is finally able to pe rsuade the Indians to al low them passage, and wo rk continues u ntil the comp any appr oaches Salt Lake C ity. Sometime l ater, Shaw rec eives word that Jac k Slade wants t o meet with h im. On the wa y to see S lade, Shaw is captured and bound by Slade& amp;#39;s men. Slade says his gr oup is going to b urn down t he Wester n Union camp and they d on&#3 9;t wan t Shaw to interfe re. Aft er Slade and h is men ride off, Sha w escapes f rom his ropes but arr ives back too late to preve nt the fi re. He hel ps rescue some of the Western Union men from the flames and burns his hands in the pr ocess. Afte r the fir e, Creighton confronts S haw for an explana tion, b ut Shaw does not re veal what he knows and is fired by C reighton . As Shaw lea ves the camp, he tell s Blake that S lade is a ctually Shaw's brother and t hat he, Shaw , will f ind Slade&# 39;s gang and sto p them from i nterfering wi th the te legraph project. Shaw rides o ff and finds Slade and his men in a nearby town. At the barber shop, S haw confront s his brothe r, whose gun is conceal ed unde r the barber& amp;#39;s she et. Slad e shoots Sha w through the sheet. Sha w fights back in spite o f his wound, killing some of the gang members, and t hen dies. Blake arrives an d conti nues the figh t with Slade wh o dies f rom his wounds. Soo n after , the Western Union li ne is compl eted and th e worker s celebrate. When Sue lamen ts the absence of S haw, Creight on tells her th at Shaw can h ear them.
