War and Peace director Sergei Bondarchuk plays the new stepfather of young Seryozha (Borya Barkhatov). So close do the stepfather and the boy become in the months following their meeting that, when time comes for the boy to move on in life, he refuses to leave his new dad's side. Their summer idyll takes place on a Soviet collective farm, managed by Bondarchuk and depicted by novice filmmakers Georgiy Daneliya and Igor Talankin in the most glowing and apolitical of terms. Though there isn't much to the plot, the film admirably succeeds as a sort of cinematic tone poem. The Georgia -born Daneliy a comes  from a disti nguishe d famil y of film  performers; his grandmot her, Ver iko Andzhapa ridze, was a f amed Georgian  silent f ilm actr ess, his cousi n, Sofiko  Chiaureli,  is also a m ajor actress,  and his mother , Meri Andzhaparidze , spen t more tha n a decad e at Mosfilm  Studioses. His 1969 c omedy Ne Go ryuy!/Don&# 39;t Worry ! succe ssfully blended humor and melanc holy, a de vice that would become Daneliya&# 39;s trade mark. In additi on to di recting, Dane liya co-au thors the s cripts f or his films and occasio nally wor ks on screenp lays for other direc tors. Dan eliya has won numerou s national a nd inter nationa l awards for his work.  In 1964,  his Ya Shag ayu po Mosk ve/I Walk A round Moscow r eceived an hono rable men tion at the Can nes Film Fest ival, whil e in 197 5 Afonya received  a special  award at the Al l Union Festiva l, a m ajor U.S. S.R. even t. Dane liya's  biggest hit i n the U. S.S.R., Mimi no (1977),  earned the spec ial prize  at the Mosco w Internationa l Film Festiv al and t he U.S. S.R. State Pr ize.
