    • David, now an old man, is still king of Israel. Among his sons, the ambitious Adonijah and the clever Solomon. The two young men are fierce rivals, since both are prospective heirs to the throne and only one can be successful. During a hunting expedition, Adonijah challenges his younger brother Solomon to a chariot race. While Solomon, though brave, still retains a modicum of caution, the daredevil Adonijah is eager to win at all costs -- and loses control of his chariot. Solomon takes the seriously injured Adonijah back to Jerusalem. On the way there they meet the attractive Abishag, who despite her youth is versed in the use of healing herbs. She actually succeeds in helping the prince. Adonijah falls in love with Abishag -- but Bathsheba arranges things so that she works for David, hoping that her youth, her beauty and her healing powers will soothe the old king's suffering. Several members of the influential priesthood and also the respected army general Joab, who served David loyally for many years, support Adonijah's claim to the throne-- even though David has still not made any decision with regard to a potential successor. The battle-experienced Joab regards Solomon as an indecisive weakling, under whose leadership the kingdom would soon fall apart. When the prophet Nathan finds out about Adonijah's conspiracy he informs Bathsheba and Solomon, who urge David to take immediate action. And so it comes to pass that preparations to anoint the future king of Israel are made both at the Spring of Enrogel, where Adonijah and his men are encamped, as well as in Jerusalem. The festive procession for Adonijah has already been assembled and the people enticed with delicious delicacies to cheer him on, when the news of Solomon's coronation reaches Enrogel. The people promptly acknowledge the will of King David and stream off to Jerusalem in their hordes to greet Solomon, their future ruler. Adonijah remains behind with a handful of loyal followers. He realizes that he has lost -- for the time being. Humbly he places his life in his brother's hands. Adonijah is forgiven on one condition: that he always remains loyal to his b rother S olomon. The g reat Ki ng David i s dead, and his son Solom on has s ucceeded him as the r ightful ruler of Israel. Ad onijah now h as a re quest to ma ke of Baths heba: he wan ts to marry Abishag. Solomon he ars about th is seemi ngly innoc ent wish, and recognizes it as a rene wed ploy o n behalf o f his brother t o reclaim the throne - - Adonijah&amp ;#39;s mar riage to t he last woma n to share Kin g David&amp ;#39;s bed woul d stren gthen his po litical pos ition consider ably. Solomon k nows that he ha s to act quickl y and decis ively if h e is to sec ure his own power. He has h is brother Adonijah and t he latter&am p;#39;s cl osest associ ate Joab exe cuted. After this radi cal decision, Solom on withdraws to present sacrifi ces. In a dream the Lord ap pears to hi m and grants him th e fulfillment of a wish, whatever it m ay be. S olomon merely asks for wisdo m -- in o rder to becom e a good ruler and judge. War with Egyp t is looming. To arm his kingdom aga inst the territorial a mbitions of it s powerfu l neigh bors, Solomon not only in troduces seve ral ref orms but als o decides t o marry the daughter o f the pharaoh. The Egyptia n princess doe s not remain Solomon&# 39;s only wif e, however: as time goe s by the kin g marri es numerous no ble women from many differe nt countri es for politi cal and eco nomic reas ons. In this way he pr eserves peace for his peop le, and creat es great p rosperity. By allowing th e women t o contin ue practic ing their dom estic cust oms and religi ous ritu als in Jer usalem as wel l, he comes in to regular con flict with the prie sthood, who see the foreign r eligions as e ndanger ing Israel 's sol e coven ant with the Lord. The wisdom granted to Solomo n by God beco mes fully e vident when the king sits i n judgment. One day two harlots each claim to be mother of the same baby. Solomon&a mp;#39;s deci sion seems utt erly cruel: he says that t he child s hould be cut in two so t hat each wom an receiv es half. Solomon can now determi ne who the rea l mother i s from her reaction : she will not allow her child to be harmed. So lomon hands the child back to its tr ue mother amid cheer s of approval. One of the most important tas ks handed down to Solomon by his father Davi d is building the gre at Temple to house the Ark of th e Covenant. It has to b e larger and more magni ficent than all othe r temples in the world, and Solomon n ow sets about fulfilli ng his f ather's wish. He pl aces Je roboam in charg e of the Is raelite work ers as c hief ove rseer. Sev en years lat er, the w ork is compl eted. T he expensive c onstruct ion materia ls have been brought from far-off lands, and the people o f Israe l have paid exceedingly high tax es with out compl aint in orde r to financ e the const ruction work. The Ark of t he Covenant ca n now finally be taken to the Temple in a triumphant pr ocession. After so ma ny years of wanderin g, the Israe lites&#3 9; most sacred possession now has a fi xed home of its own. Peop le stream t o Jerusalem from across t he entire c ountry to ce lebrate the gr eat day. Ab ishag, now ma rried, comes too and br ings her famil y. Solomon has decided to m ingle am ong the peo ple in dis guise, and he and Abisha g are overjoyed when they ac cidentally meet again after so many years. The Temple mak es Jeru salem and its king famous th roughout the world. Even t he dark- skinned Queen of She ba sets o ff with a large retinue to visit the wise and cultivated So lomon a nd admire his magnifice nt city. The ad miratio n turns ou t to be m utual: Solo mon, cap tivated by her beauty, falls deeply in l ove with her . The two of them have a child, Menelik, but o ne day the Queen of Sheba decides to leave. S he does not want Menelik t o be depriv ed of the regal digni ty awaiting him in his home country. Solomon stays behind, with a heav y heart. Th e king ha s now achiev ed everything h e set his he art on, bu t with th e passing of th e years the wi se Solomon gra dually becomes a melancholy, skeptical o ld man wh o regul arly questio ns his ver y existence . Material thin gs seem t o represe nt the only re ality for hi m. He als o refuses to adopt any kind of stea dy policy, es pecially in religious matters. With his foreign wiv es, Solomon sacrifices to foreign gods, and this incurs th e wrath of the priesthood. The loyal Je roboam a ppeals to his king& amp;#39;s consc ience, but to no ava il. During o ne of So lomon&#39 ;s sorties in disguise amo ng his p eople, a simple farm er remind s him of the first of th e Ten Comma ndments reve aled by the L ord to Moses: &qu ot;You sh all have no other gods before me. " At another de cisive moment, God Himself speaks to Solomon an d announce s the punishmen t for his sinf ulness: the kingdo m will collapse af ter Solomon&amp ;#39;s deat h. The king ha s grown old and weary. He has lost t ouch wi th the peop le of Israel, who a re suffering from h eavy taxatio n and forc ed labor. Solom on has t reated his lon g-standing c ompanion Jer oboam, to whom he ent rusted the ad ministr ation of th e norther n tribes, with murd erous anger ever since a prophet predicted the divisi on of th e kingdom to him. The king no longe r has the st rength t o change t hings -- he ju st leaves them as they are. The consequen ces of thi s become clear shortly aft er his dea th. Solomon&amp ;#39;s so n and succes sor Rehoboam treats t he coun try&amp ;#39;s l eaders with ar rogance, and p rovokes the divisio n of th e kingdom i nto two parts : the only trib e still loyal to hi m is that of Judah, w hile all the others unite under Jeroboam . The pro phecy has been fu lfilled. The kingdo m that So lomon recei ved from his father D avid, a nd invested wit h such mi ght and m agnificence, is now divided.
