    • Sixty Glorious Years is an exercise in the creation of iconography, both for Victoria and its star, Anna Neagle (who subsequently became known as 'Regal Neagle'). Just as Elizabeth I commissioned artists to create flattering iconic images for public consumption, so this film performs a similar function, for Neagle is more beautiful than the real life Victoria. Controversial events (such as the 'Irish problem') are omitted and unpleasant aspects of Victoria's character (her petulance, arrogance, favouritism and 'right to privilege') are glossed over as endearing little 'whims'. Albert acts as a moderating influence when she goes too far. The film followed a year after the highly successful Victoria the Great (d. Herbert Wilcox, 1937). Again the screenplay is by Miles Malleson and Robert Vansittart, and many of the supporting cast (the cream of acting talent of period) repeat their roles, this time for the colour cameras. This was the first full length Technicolor film of cinematographer Freddie Young, who captures the spectacle of royal weddings, grand balls and opulent interiors, with scenes actually filmed at royal palaces. Vivid battle scenes, set in Alexander Korda's empire territory (Sevastopol and the Sudan), rival those in The Four Feathers (d. Zoltan Korda 1939). The title music sets the tone: a regal c hoir sings over a shot of the crown. Elgar&# 39;s 19 01 'Po mp and Circums tance&#39 ; march is heard dur ing the d iamond ju bilee celeb rations and , as Vi ctoria&# 39;s coffi n lies in state, t he film con cludes with A nthony Collin s' stately music accompanied by the te xt of Rudy ard Kipl ing&#39 ;s 'Les t we forget '. Co mbined wi th the emoti onal ap peal of scenes of Victoria connecti ng with her 'ord inary folk &#3 9;, this is stirring s tuff. Th e film c onnects with cont emporary events of 1938. The release o f two cele bratory roy al films was intended to b oost pu blic affect ion for the monar chy in th e wake o f Edward VII I&#3 9;s abdication . Anglo-German relations wer e anothe r touchy subjec t. With another war on th e horizon, inf luential voices want ed appeasem ent, an d the film c ould be seen to fit that agenda. Victori a herself was of mainly Ger man descent, nicknamed & amp;#39;th e grandmother o f Europe&am p;#39;, wh ile Albert is a 'goo d German&amp ;#39;, charmingly pla yed by A nton Walbrook as a cu ltured, dece nt man.
