Forced to t ravel on foo t after his horse was hur t, Shaw at f irst consider s steal ing Creighton& amp;#39;s h orse, but c hanges his mind and tak es the ma n with him, saving h is life. Sometime later, follow ing his recove ry, Crei ghton retur ns to Omaha, N ebraska and pla ns the construct ion of a telegr aph line from Omah a to Salt Lake City, Ut ah. Facing considerab le opposit ion to the line from Conf ederate s oldiers, Indi ans, and out laws, Creighton elicits the help of his s ister Sue ( Virginia Gi lmore), forema n Pat Groga n (Minor Watson), and assi stant Ho mer Kett le (Chill Will s). Looking t o put h is outlaw past behind hi m, Sha w arriv es at Cr eighton 's W estern Union of fice lookin g for hone st work an d is hired as a scout by Gro gan who is unawa re of his pa st. Creighto n recogniz es him among the me n and allow s him to sta y despite his susp icions. Crei ghton also hi res ten derfoot R ichard Blake (R obert Youn g), a Harvard -educated engi neer as a favor to Blake&# 39;s father. Shaw and Blake are bot h attracted to Sue and vie for her attention, but their roma ntic ri valry is cu t short when construction of the te legraph line st arts on July 4 , 1861. A fter work commences on the line , one of the men is k illed a pparently by a myster ious band of ca ttle-rus tling In dians. Unconvi nced that India ns are to blame, Sha w rides out t o investig ate and fol lows the rustl ers' trail to t he camp of Jack Sla de, a former friend a nd cohort, whose gang co mmitted the k illing disgui sed as Indi ans—the g ang Shaw l eft followin g his last bank robbery. Sl ade reveal s that they are workin g for the C onfederacy to disrupt Western Union becaus e they believe the telegra ph service wil l help the U nion. Shaw rides away and returns to the line. Not wanting to tur n in his former friends, S haw tells Creighton that a la rge ban d of Dako ta Indians st ole the c attle, an d recomme nds that they s imply replace t he herd and n ot risk a fight with the Indians. Sometim e later, a c onfrontation ta kes pla ce betwee n men working on the fo rward li ne and a band of drun ken Indians. Wh en one of the Indians tries to steal some equipmen t, a nervo us Blake shoots him, i gnoring Sh aw' s order to rema in calm. After word arrives tha t the ma in camp is u nder at tack by o ther Indian s, the We stern Union men rush b ack to help w ith the defense. At the main ca mp, Slad e's me n, who are a gain disg uised as Indians, steal th e Wester n Union hor ses. The comp any discover the ruse w hen one of the wounde d Indians turns out to be a white man. Fo rced to b uy back their stolen horses from Slad e, Creight on becomes s uspicious of S haw&amp ;#39;s i nvolvement, especially w hen he a dmits t o knowing the gang. S oon the U.S . Army arrives and announces the Indians h ave now r efused to allow th e telegra ph line s to go th rough their t erritory in response t o Blake 's s hooting of the drunk en Indian. Cre ighton, Sh aw, and Blak e ride out to convince Ch ief Spotted Horse to allow them to bui ld the l ine through In dian territory , even thoug h the man Blak e wounde d was Spott ed Horse&# 39;s son. Crei ghton i s finally able to persuade the Indian s to allow t hem pas sage, and wor k contin ues until t he compan y approa ches Salt Lake City. Sometim e later, Shaw receive s word th at Jack Slade w ants to m eet with him . On the way to see S lade, Shaw is captured and bo und by Slade 's men . Slade says his grou p is going t o burn down t he Wester n Union cam p and the y don&amp ;#39;t want Sha w to interf ere. After Slad e and his men ride off , Shaw esc apes from his ropes but ar rives back too late to prevent th e fire. He he lps rescue some of the West ern Union men f rom the flames an d burns his hands in t he proc ess. Af ter the fire, Creig hton conf ronts Shaw for an explanation, b ut Shaw do es not re veal what he k nows and is f ired by Creigh ton. As Shaw leaves the ca mp, he t ells Blake t hat Slade is actual ly Shaw&amp ;#39;s b rother a nd that he, Shaw, w ill fin d Slade&a mp;#39; s gang and s top the m from int erfering with the telegraph project. Shaw rides off and finds Sla de and his men in a nearby t own. At the barber shop, Shaw confront s his brot her, whose gun is co ncealed under t he barber&# 39;s sheet. Slade shoot s Shaw through the she et. Shaw fights ba ck in spite of his wound, ki lling some of the gang member s, and then di es. Blake arriv es and continue s the fight w ith Slade who d ies from his wo unds. S oon after, the West ern Union line is co mpleted and th e workers c elebrate. When Sue lam ents th e absence of Shaw, Creig hton tells her that Shaw ca n hear them.
