    • Middle class st udent Bob Le tellier enter s a new worl d when he m eets Alain, a free-think ing rebel w ho, al ong wit h his group of young P arisians , has opte d for a li fe of instant gratifica tion instead of work and comm itment. At a party , Bob meets a young woman, Mic, who app ears to be ju st as carefr ee and cynica l as Alain. Mi c&# 39;s only dre am is t o own a luxury car, and wi th Bob&am p;#39;s help, she mana ges to fi nd the mone y to but it. Mi c&#39 ;s friend Clo di scovers she is pregna nt and, no t knowing who the fa ther is, sh e asks Bo b to marr y her. W hen they next meet a t a party, Bob and Mic de ny that they have any feelings f or one ano ther - a declar ation that soo n leads to t ragedy. .. Marc el Carné is w idely regarded as one of the standard be arers of F rench qualit y cinema of the 1930s an d 1940s, respo nsible fo r such maste rpieces as Quai des brum es (1938 ) and Les E nfants du Paradis (1945). How ir onic then that, in 1958, towa rds the end of his film-mak ing career, he should make a film which da red to p ortray the attitudes and beha viour of the 1950s youth, in a way that effecti vely capture s the mood an d sentimen t of the time. Les Tricheurs was a hugely controvers ial film, not lea st because of its blatant depicti on of ad olescent free-love , and wa s even banne d in so me regions of France. I t also re ceived s ome intensel y unfavourabl e reviews, most notab ly from the yo ung hothea ds on the Cah iers du c inéma such as François Truff aut who cited t his film as a prim e examp le of the dec line of F rench cin ema into me diocrity. In s pite of all this negativ e press, t he film proved to be an ast onishing co mmercia l succe ss, attracting five mil lion ci nema-goers , and was awarde d the Grand Pr ix du Cinéma fr ançais in 1958. Whilst Les Tri cheurs is n ot as flawless as Carné&amp ;#39;s earlier masterpie ces, it is noneth eless a si gnificant wor k, having the power to both shock an d move its audien ce, whi lst havi ng great enter tainment v alue. It evoke s the mood of its time in a way th at few Fren ch films of th is period did, depicting y oung peop le as p leasure-seeki ng rebels, rejecting the austeri ty and d isciplin e of the pre vious genera tion whil st pursu ing a life without c ares, respons ibiliti es or love. Si milarities with James Dean' s films of the 1950s (most notably Rebe l without a Cause) are ap parent, al though Carné&am p;#39;s treatme nt of young peo ple is far more abst ract - in h is film th ey merely sy mbolise a wo rld that has lo st its way, more or less v ictims of post-war pro sperity. Although the yo ung people in Les Tricheu rs lack the authenticity to be tota lly credible, the film does make an i mportant , and indeed q uite dis turbing p oint, about w here the pe rmissive soci ety may b e heading . Much of the p leasure of the film is in the per formanc es from i ts four lead actors, Jac ques Charrier , Pascale Pe tit, La urent Terzi eff and Andréa Parisy, although onl y Terzieff is really conv incing in his ro le. Mar cel Carné or iginally consi dered A lain Delon and Jean-Pau l Belmondo for the parts o f Bob a nd Alain respe ctively , befo re opting for Charrier a nd Terz ieff. As a consola tion, Carné o ffered Belm ondo a sm aller part in the film - alas too smal l for th e actor to be noti ced by th e public. B elmondo&amp ;#39;s breakth rough had t o wait until the following y ear when he starred in Jean-Lu c Godard&amp ;#39;s revoluti onary A bout de souffle, a film w hich off ers a ve ry different pe rspective of the youth generation.
