    • Sixty Glorious Years is an exercise in the creation of iconography, both for Victoria and its star, Anna Neagle (who subsequently became known as 'Regal Neagle'). Just as Elizabeth I commissioned artists to create flattering iconic images for public consumption, so this film performs a similar function, for Neagle is more beautiful than the real life Victoria. Controversial events (such as the 'Irish problem') are omitted and unpleasant aspects of Victoria's character (her petulance, arrogance, favouritism and 'right to privilege') are glossed over as endearing little 'whims'. Albert acts as a moderating influence when she goes too far. The film followed a year after the highly successful Victoria the Great (d. Herbert Wilcox, 1937). Again the screenplay is by Miles Malleson and Robert Vansittart, and many of the supporting cast (the cream of acting talent of period) repeat their roles, this time for the colour cameras. This was the first full length Technicolor film of cinematographer Freddie Young, who captures the spectacle of royal weddings, grand balls and opulent interiors, with scenes actually filmed at royal palaces. Vivid battle scenes, set in Alexander Korda's empire territory (Sevastopol and the Sudan), rival those in The Four Feathers (d. Zoltan Korda 1939). The title music sets the tone: a regal choir si ngs over a shot of the crown . Elgar 's 1 901 ' Pomp and C ircumstance &#3 9; march is heard during the di amond jubilee c elebration s and, as Victori a' s coffin l ies in st ate, the film conclude s with An thony Colli ns& #39; st ately music a ccompanied b y the text of Rud yard Kipling&a mp;#39;s &amp ;#39;Lest we forget&#39 ;. Combine d with the emot ional app eal of scenes of Victoria c onnecting with her ' ordinar y folk&a mp;#39;, th is is s tirring stuff . The film connects with contemporary ev ents of 19 38. The release of two ce lebratory royal fi lms was intende d to boo st public a ffection for t he mona rchy in th e wake of Ed ward VII I&#3 9;s abdica tion. Anglo- German relat ions were ano ther tou chy subj ect. With a nother war on t he horizon, influen tial voices w anted appeas ement, and the film coul d be seen t o fit that a genda. Victori a herse lf was of mai nly German descent, n icknamed 'the grandmothe r of Europe&amp ;#39;, while Albert is a &am p;#39;good Ger man', charmingly played by Anton Walbrook a s a culture d, dec ent man. Sixty Glorious Years now se ems unduly f ormal and re verential. Had movies exi sted during Vi ctoria& #39;s reign (they on ly emerged at the end) thi s might have be en the kind of film produc ed. Unli ke Mrs Brown (d . John Madden, 1997), it is al l so very & #39;Victor ian'. Roger Phili p Mellor
